During the mid-18th century, Ireland operated under the Second Irish Pound currency system, utilizing specific copper tokens and coins to manage local commerce. This 1753 half penny was issued under the authority of King George II to address a chronic shortage of low-denomination currency in the Irish provinces. The production of these copper pieces was often outsourced to the Tower Mint in London, as Ireland lacked its own sovereign minting facility at the time.
